Apartment Project was established in 1999 by Selda Asal as the first artist-run space in Istanbul. Since its inception, Apartment Project has served as a platform for collaboration and cooperation, bringing together artists from different backgrounds to create provocative and innovative work.
In 2012, Apartment Project moved to Berlin-Neukölln and became legally recognized in Germany as an Eingetragener Verein (registered association). Since then, it has also functioned as a mentoring and umbrella organization for a small group of art collectives whose philosophies are in line with Apartment Project’s mission.
Apartment Project supports artistic initiatives that embody the spirit of interdisciplinarity and collaboration, often in mobile or international contexts. The organization has realized numerous projects in Turkey, Germany, the South Caucasus, the Balkans, and Iran. In all of these localities, Apartment Project fosters work that fits within its central areas of interest.
Our central areas of interest are: politically engaged art, transdisciplinary experimentation, and cultural community outreach.
Art in Political Context
Projects addressing systems of power and social/physical violence.
Apartment Project supports art that questions dominant narratives of social and political order, and unflinchingly aims to build forms of solidarity. We facilitate work that uses inspiration and creativity to counter forces of nationalism, discrimination, and oppression.
Cross-pollination. Discovery of new forms and functions.
Apartment Project invites practitioners from a wide range of traditions to come together and create works that push the boundaries of art, media, and science.
Cultural Community Outreach
Socially conscious art and education.
Apartment Project is committed to engaging its broad community through social, cultural, and educational initiatives. Our organization reaches out of neighbors, youth, and at-risk or oppressed populations to empower them to tell their own stories across all forms of media.
